More than 1,500 walkers celebrated in style and marked the 10th anniversary of the St Ann’s Hospice Manchester Midnight Walk.
Heavy showers eased thankfully just as walkers set off on a 10k circuit of the city centre past landmarks such as the Hilton Hotel, Manchester Cathedral and the Northern Quarter.
St Ann’s is hoping to raise around £180,000 from the event, bringing the total amount of donations since the walk began in 2007 to £1.8m.
The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Coun Carl Austin-Behan, sent walkers on their way from Manchester Central.

“When I saw the Midnight Walk advertised I thought the least I could do was go along and cheer on the walkers. St Ann’s does amazing work and many are walking in memory of loved ones so it’s a poignant occasion.”
The Mayor joined in a Zumba warm up after live music had got the party under way at Manchester Central. The event was hosted by BBC Radio Manchester presenter Phil Trow and a minute’s applause was held in memory of lost loved ones.
Rachel McMillan, acting Chief Executive at St Ann’s, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed yet again by the support of local people and to see everyone gathered together to raise money for the hospice was incredible.
“The goodwill and generosity of the people of this city never fails to amaze me. We’re so appreciative of everyone’s support.
“With only a third of our income coming from the NHS, events like this are so important to ensure we can continue to care for the thousands of people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses who come to St Ann’s. A big thank you to everyone who took part.
“We can’t wait for all the sponsorship money to be returned so we can see if we’ve hit our target of £1.8m over the last 10 years.
“It’ll be incredible if we have, so once again a huge thanks to everyone from across Greater Manchester who has stayed up late to show their support.”
