Beechwood Cancer Care Centre sets up network for young people

Beechwood Cancer Care Centre

A new support network for younger people living with cancer has been set up by Stockport charity Beechwood Cancer Care Centre.

The charity in Bridgehall, Stockport, will be holding its first session at Stockport Cricket Club, Beech Road, Cale Green, on Friday, September 16, between 2pm and 3pm.

It is hoped by deputy clinical manger Colette Kelly that this network will develop to accommodate cancer patients across Greater Manchester and Cheshire and become a social support group that will be self-managed by patients for patients with no input from health professionals.

She said: “Approximately 10 per cent of all cancers are diagnosed between the ages of 25 and 49.

“Having a diagnosis so early in life brings certain challenges and for people to meet other people who face the same difficulties should help to reduce the feelings of isolation, which many say they experience.

“The group will not be in a medical setting, there will be no speeches, no standing up to introduce yourself, just a drink and chat with people who are going through the same things.

“The first meeting will be a chance for people to tell us what they want, what they think will help, whether it’s going for a meal, bowling or a weekend away. The agenda for the group will be for the group to decide not medical professionals.”
