Liverpool Collegiate Senior Colts 14-31 Heaton Moor Senior Colts

The omens didn’t look good when an illness-ravaged Heaton Moor squad crossed to Merseyside to take on Liverpool Collegiate in the Lancashire League.

But the recent Jekyll-and-Hyde form continued as the Stockport boys put in a terrific performance, dominating proceedings in a five-try victory.

Declan McGeehan dominated up front in a man-of-the-match display, ably assisted by Bob Berry and James Bellis, who both played in unfamiliar pack positions.

The Moor boys started brightly and after eight minutes Cameron Kilbride broke from his own half, one of several throughout the day, eventually off-loading to elder brother Joe for a brilliant try, Nick Tenney converting.

Collegiate hit back strongly within ten minutes and, despite an awesome try-saving tackle by Cameron Kilbride, eventually going over to level scores.

Some of Moor’s tackling very pleasing, particularly Cameron Kilbride and Dylan Starkie.

Ten minutes before the interval, a gap appeared before Asa Bottomley and he scored, Tenney again converting.

Cameron Kilbride then offloaded to Tenney for a 12-point half-time lead.

Asa Bottomley started the second half where he left off, going over in the corner after another sustained period of Moor pressure.

But Liverpool were battling hard and pressurised Moor incessantly, and 20 minutes in, it paid off. After three successive lineouts, they finally touched down for a deserved converted score.

But straight from the kick it was Moor’s turn again. Collegiate, camped in their own half, attempted one pass too many and the influential Bottomley intercepted for his hat-trick, adding to his ever-accumulating seasonal tally.

The game was then halted early after an injury to a home player.

A good Heaton Moor performance and special mention to some of the younger members of the squad, Charlie Pinhorn, Dan Smith and Zac Ghariani, who all shone and showed that they are ready at this level.
