Cheshire firefighters lace up for charity

Middlewich firefighters will be lacing up their running shoes to take part in their sixth Great Manchester Run to raise money for charity.

The race takes place on Sunday, May 22, in Manchester city centre and the team of six will be raising money for The Firefighters Charity and also to provide funding for an outdoor recreational and educational play area for Middlewich Primary School.

The target set this year is £2,000 and, to make things harder, the team will be running the 10km event in full fire kit and carrying a 12kg breathing apparatus set.

This team doesn’t do things by halves so they will also be carrying a seven-metre ladder along the route.

Firefighter Ashley Powell is organising the team and will be running on the day.

He said: “We are doing this run for two great causes but we didn’t just want to run, we wanted to really push ourselves.

“By wearing our fire kit, breathing apparatus kit and carrying a ladder we thought that people would really get behind us and give generously.”

How to donate

If you wish to support the team and donate to charity then you can donate via a dedicated website: www.justgiving.com/999FIRE or by texting MFIR85  £amount  to 70070.

Ashley added: “Alternatively there will be donation buckets dotted around Middlewich where you can give money, so please look out for them, give generously and help us to make a difference.”
