Classic Sports Car Club’s ‘Swinging Sixties’ steal the show at Oulton Park

The Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC) visited Oulton Park for four-wheel action. On the programme were races for RSV Graphics New Millenium and Motorsports School Turbo Tin Tops, Adams & Page Swinging Sixties, Tin Tops, Advantage Motorsport Future Classics, Gold Arts Magnificent Sevens and Cartek Motorsport Modern Classics With Puma Cup.

Cloudy, dry conditions deteriorated into a very wet morning practice. The weather did, however, improve, leaving a dry track for the afternoon racing.

A huge grid of 38 cars lined up for the Adams & Page Swinging Sixties race, a 40-minute event for one or two drivers with a compulsory pit stop.

On pole was the Halsery/Arif Datsun 240Z with the John Molfe TVR Tuscan alongside. Row two was Malcolm Johnson in his Lotus Europa and Richard Belcher in his Ford Lotus Cortina.

The Halsery/Arif Datsun made a poor start dropping to fifth by the first corner. Wolfe took the lead from Johnson, Belcher and David McDonalds TR6, which had started from row four.

By the end of lap one it was all change with Wolfe still leading from Daniel Williamson in his Chevrolet Corvette and the Reuben TVR Griffith, Nigel Reuben at the wheel in third.

Williamson took the lead on lap two with Reuben now in second and Wolfe relegated to third. Wolfe was the first to pit after 12 minutes elevating Halsery/Arif to third.

Reuben slowly closed on Williamson until the Corvette pitted, his pit stop also including a 30-second penalty for a previous race win, rejoining in 10th place.

Nigel Reuben pitted with 18 minutes to go to hand over to Oliver Reuben. They also had to suffer a 30-second penalty for a previous race win and rejoined fourth.

Reuben climbed to second place behind the leader Wolfe and the two TVRs lapped within a second of each other with the Williamson Corvette closing.

Reuben took the lead with six minutes to go, Williamson taking second a couple of minutes later. Wolfe held onto third after being pressured in the last few minutes by James Keevill’s Lotus Elan in fourth.

In other events, Tom Brenton won the Advantage Motorsport Future Classics in his Ford Sierra XR8, Michael Russell won the Cartek Motorsport Modern Classics in his BMW M3, Tim Davis won the Gold Arts Magnificent Sevens, Dominic Malone won the RSV Graphics New Millenium race, also in a BMW M3, and C Simpson/S Simpson won the Tin Tops race in their Peugeot 206.

Local drivers had a torrid time at the meeting. Petch & Co! (Wilmslow) stopped their TR4 on lap one of the Swinging Sixties race as did Paul Masters (Stockport) Clio in the tin tops race. In the Cartek Motorsport Modern Classics the Benjamin Griffiths (Winsford) Honda Accord was given a sixty second penalty for a pit lane infringement, dropping it to sixth place.
