A young épée fencer from Didsbury has been selected for Great Britain cadet squad.

Nicholas Grimshaw, who is a pupil at The Manchester Grammar School, has been called up to the squad by British Fencing after a string of impressive performances in fiercely competitive selection events.

And with the majority of the GB squad aged 16, at just 14-years-old, it makes Nicholas’s achievement even more impressive.

Currently ranked 11th in the country for the under-17 category, Nicholas will compete with Great Britain’s cadet squad at Klagenfurt, Austria, in the European Cadet Circuit next month.

Klagenfurt is a top flight zonal event, in a series which is a portal for qualification to the European and World Championships.

Nicholas fences for Leon Paul Epée and over the summer he also worked with lead épée coach at the Manchester Fencing Centre, Richard Lloyd-Jones.

Director of Sport at The Manchester Grammar School Mark Walmsley said: “We are so proud of Nicholas’s achievements, which are fully deserved and testament to his fantastic work ethic. It’s a huge achievement to have been called up to the GB squad and we wish him every success as he fences on the international stage.”

Earlier this year, Nicholas represented MGS at the National Independent Schools Fencing Championships and performed exceptionally in the Mount-Haes épée competition to reach the final, eventually finishing runner-up.

Previous to that, he travelled to Poland with the England youth squad for the Challenge Wratislava, the most prestigious fencing event in the youth calendar with entries from many of the leading clubs in Northern and eastern Europe, where he reached the last 32.
