A young swimmer from The Manchester Grammar School (MGS) bagged two gold medals at an international competition and now has his sights firmly set on the 2018 European Swimming Championships.

Year 12 boy Harry Lewis-Mitchell, 17, who is from Didsbury and represents the Stockport Metro Swimming Club, travelled to Slovenia to swim for his club against an extremely competitive field.

And he did not disappoint, as he won gold medals in his age category for both the 100m and 200m butterfly.

Harry also bagged a bronze medal in the final open category for the 200m fly and narrowly missed out on another medal in the open 100m fly, finishing fourth.

However, the open age swimmers who placed higher than Harry were at least eight-years-older, so his exceptional performances against much older swimmers will stand him in good stead as he sets his sights firmly on competing at the trials for the European Swimming Championships, to be held in Glasgow in 2018.

Harry has been a keen swimmer since a young age and has won a host of gold medals in the water.

Harry said: “I am delighted to have won two gold medals and a bronze medal, particularly as I was up against much older swimmers in the Open category.

“It’s a long time until the European Swimming Championships but that’s my aim and hopefully I can keep winning medals in the run up to the championships and put in a good performance for my country.”

Director of Sport at The Manchester Grammar School, Mark Walmsley, said: Harry is a fantastic athlete and swimmer and he practices so hard for the sport he loves.

“It is great to see him thriving, and winning medal after medal, which will put him on the right path towards the 2018 European Championships.
