Freezing conditions for Oulton Park’s 2018 opener

A bitterly cold day with frequent snow showers and sunny intervals greeted the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) for their first four-wheel meeting of the 2018 season at Oulton Park.

On the programme was racing for Caterham Graduates, UK National Legends, CNC Heads Sports Saloons and Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club.

The Saker RAPX S1-400’s of Paul Rose and Steve Harris took charge of the front row of the grid for the CNC Heads Sports/Saloon race.

Third and fourth fastest on the second row were Danny Bird in his Spire GTR 1000 and David Harvey in his Locosaki 1400.

Jon Woolfitt (MK Indy 1400) got a fantastic start from row six to go into the first corner second behind David Harvey but all to no avail as the red flags came out due to an incident further down the field.

At the restart, Harvey took the lead from Danny Bird and Garry Wardle in his Porsche 997 in second and third.

By the end of lap one Rose had climbed back to third, grabbing second by the end of lap two, making the order Harvey, Rose, then Bird – but not for long.

Rose took the lead on lap three and pulled away from second-placed Harvey. Harris retired his Saker at the end of the same lap after an ‘off’.

Rose took a comfortable win from Harvey, who had been caught in the closing stages by Bird, less than 0.3secs separating them at the flag.

After having his first start spoilt, Woolfitt brought his MK Indy home fourth.

In other events there were wins for Declan Dolan and Lee Collins, who took two wins apiece in the Caterham Graduates.

Will Gibson and Stephen Whitelegg were winners of the two Legends Races, while David Mellor and Simon Kendrick took a win each in the MGOC races.

Danny Bird from Stockport finished third in the Sports Saloons, while Garry Wardle from Macclesfield finished seventh, Dan Crossley from Bramhall eighth, and Mike Storey from Crewe 19th.

In the Caterhams, Jamie Winrow from Macclesfield finished third and fourth in his races, Harry Cramer from Northwich got a fifth place but unfortunately failed to finish his first race.

Also in the Caterhams, Ben Winrow (Macclesfield) took two second places, Greame Smith (Macclesfield) finished 11th and 16th, Matthew Carpenter (Stockport) came in 23rd and 26th, and Robert Winrow (Macclesfield) was left in 15th and 23rd after unfortunate penalties for two false starts.
