General Election 2017: Results for South Manchester, Stockport, Trafford and Cheshire

(from @CheshireEast)

On a bad General Election night for the Conservatives, their Stockport MPs held their seats in Stockport.

Both Mary Robinson (Cheadle) and William Wragg (Hazel Grove) kept the seats they won in 2015.

Labour’s Afzal Khan took Manchester Gorton, the seat left vacant following the death of veteran MP Sir Gerald Kaufman.

In Trafford, Conservative Graham Brady was re-elected in Altrincham & Sale West but with a much reduced majority and it was a successful night for Labour in Cheshire.

The party gained its target seats Weaver Vale, Warrington South and Crewe and Nantwich from the Conservatives.

Elsewhere in the country, former Lib Dem leader and former Deputy PM Nick Clegg lost his Sheffield Hallam seat to Labour’s Jared O’Mara.

And the former SNP leader and former First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond was unseated in Gordon by the Conservatives’ Colin Clark.

Theresa May hopes to remain as Britain’s Prime Minister despite failing to secure a parliamentary majority after the snap General Election resulted in a surge of support for Labour.

May will go to Buckingham Palace at 12.30pm on Friday and seek permission from the Queen to form a government, a Downing Street spokesman said.
