Grand Central water slides are a hit after re-opening to the public

The refurbished slides at Grand Central

Kids big and small have been making a huge splash at Stockport’s Grand Central after its water slides re-opened.

The 50m flumes, which have been extensively renovated after being closed for four years, have been a huge hit with swimmers, welcoming almost 10,000 thrill-seekers since opening in January.

They are accompanied by a new children’s splash pool with water fountains and play equipment, and a luxurious health spa, which has also been a big hit with adults.

Malcolm McPhail, CEO of Life Leisure, the not-for-profit company that runs the facilities on behalf of the council, said they have extended the slides’ opening times to cater for the huge demand.

He said: “The slides have been an absolute hit. Bringing a fun element back to the pool was really important and the new slides and enhanced children’s pool ensure the centre provides a fantastic offering for families.”

The new updated health spa has also proved really popular with members and non-members, boasting a sauna, steam room, hydrotherapy pool, aromatherapy room and a special relaxation area.

Grand Central’s new health spa has also been a hit

The extensive renovations are part of Life Leisure’s ongoing mission to help boost the health, fitness and wellbeing of Stockport residents, and complements Grand Central’s famous swimming facilities including the town’s only 50m swimming pool.

Malcolm added: “We’ve worked really closely with existing members, the Council and the general public to understand what changes and improvements would make a difference to people’s lives.

“That’s why, as well as introducing aspects such as a new health spa and an upgraded splash pool, we’ve looked at practical measures such as parking.

“We are thrilled that we can now offer fun, fitness and relaxation all under one roof!”

The pool at Grand Central, in the centre of Stockport, is open daily, with the splash pool and slides open from 11am – 3pm on weekends, and from 4.15pm until 8pm during the week. Opening hours will also be extended during half-term.

In addition, all users can get two hours of free parking at the neighbouring NCP car park.
