Tyco BMW rider Christian Iddon suffered a broken leg after crashing during race two of the latest round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Knockhill in Scotland.

The Stockport rider ran strongly throughout free practice, at a track he was looking forward to racing round, and set the sixth fastest time in a heavily delayed qualifying session after rain had badly affected proceedings.

Conditions that saw Iddon’s team-mate, Keith Farmer, fall and suffer fractures to both legs.

A wet morning led to a drying track for race one, and Iddon soon found himself in third place behind the Honda of Xavi Fores, where he would stay for much of the race.

In fact it was only two laps from the end that the duo were passed, dropping Iddon to a solid fourth place finish at the flag.

A tenth place start left Christian with plenty to do, and by the end of lap two he was up to eighth place.

But four turns in on lap three saw the former Supermoto champion take a tumble. Losing the front wheel, the resulting slide led to Iddon tangling with the bike, and breaking his fibula.

Christian added: “I’ve ended up with a lower leg break, I have broken the bone before. Last time I came back quickly, perhaps too quickly.

“We’ve got three weeks until [the next round at] Snetterton and my aim is to be there. Whether that is feasible or not, the next couple of weeks will be telling.

“I was looking forward to the weekend. I actually hold the ‘old’ Supersport lap record around there, it’s a track I obviously go well at, and I was excited about seeing how the new bike would go around there.”

Iddon sits seventh in the overall championship standings, 20 points outside the showdown positions.

Next up, the Bennetts British Superbike Championship visits Snetterton in Norfolk over the weekend of July 19-21 for rounds 12 and 13 of the 2019 season.
