King’s School enjoys double sevens success

King's were named over winners at the Warwick Sevens

The King’s School has been crowned one of England’s top rugby sevens schools winning the overall championship at the national Warwick Sevens.

The Macclesfield young men competed in all five age groups from under-12s up to under-16s, against the cream of young English rugby talent including sides from top sports academy Millfield, winning the under-15 event, reaching the final in the under-13 event and winning the Plate at under-14 level

When all the wins, losses and points aggregates were totted up from the five age groups, King’s were named as the top school and will as always will be one of the teams to beat in all the forthcoming prestigious end of season national tournaments.

The under-15 final saw King’s take on a hard-working Wimbledon College team, with flying centre Will Fosbrook darting through the cover at the death to steal the win 26-22.

Throughout the tournament, captain Sam Higginson had shone with a display of strength and leadership.

King’s Director of Rugby, Guy Mason, said: “We have got a lot of very good coaches lower down the school who embed sevens trechnique into their practice sessions so keeping good depth and minimising contact come as second nature.”

County Sevens Title

The King’s Rugby First team have lifted the county sevens title with a powerful display against the cream of the Wheatsheaf sides at St. Ambrose College.

King’s won in impressive fashion beating King William’s, Lymm HS, Calday and then Bishop Heber School 35 – 5 in a what turned into a rout.

King’s scored 142 points and conceded only five all day and were by far and away the best team on display. Fluid centre Cameron Redpath, rapier scrum half Will Hodgson and high velocity winger Kieran McKeever all excelled.

King’s Director of Rugby Guy Mason said: “It was a squad performance. You are only ever as strong as your weakest link and we had strength in depth.

“We have a talented group of young rugby players with the full set of running and handling skills needed to shine at sevens who have been moulded by our own sevens tactician, ex Macclesfield first team stalwart Paul Bartle.”
