A pupil from The Manchester Grammar School is celebrating after being selected for the 2016 England Youth Fencing Squad.

Nicholas Grimshaw, 12, from Didsbury, has been invited to represent his country for the epee event at a prestigious international tournament that will take place in Wroclaw, Poland, this March.

He is one of just six under-13 boys to be chosen for the England Squad and it will be the first rung in representing his country at fencing.

The Challenge Wratislavia Competition will involve young fencers from leading clubs and national squads across northern Europe and is a fantastic achievement for Nicholas after a very successful 2015.

He achieved consistent podium finishes during the year, including first place at the 2015 Under-12 British Championships, and was ranked No.1 in the end of season Under 13 national rankings.

Nicholas belongs to Stockport Fencing Club and also trains at The Manchester Fencing Centre. He hopes to continue his progress and eventually become a senior international.

Nicholas said: “I started fencing when I was very small and really enjoy it. The sport is fast and exciting with lots to think about!  It’s been busy with school work at MGS but there is always loads of other interesting stuff going on and the rugby club is great.

“I am learning German, which I hope may be useful when I am older because I think their fencers are the best in the world and I’d like to train there.”

Nicholas’ mother Rachel said: “We are so proud of Nicholas. It is a great achievement to be picked for England and testament to the hard work he puts into his training. Technically, he is very secure for his age and selection was his target for the season.”
