Manchester Grammar School musician performs at the Last Night of the Proms

George Strivens

A talented young musician from The Manchester Grammar School performed on TV at the Last Night of the Proms.

George Strivens, 16, was just one of 35 young musicians selected from thousands of entries to perform with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Saturday night.

The Withington musician, who plays the French horn, was part of the BBC Proms Youth Ensemble led by conductor Sakari Oramo during the world premiere of a new piece of music by Tom Harrold.

In order to be chosen from a field of applicants drawn from across the UK, George had to send the judges a video of himself playing the French horn and clearly his talents impressed them.

George said: “Saturday night was one of the greatest experiences of my life and will live long in my memory.

“I was on TV for a little bit and then got interviewed at the interval for BBC Radio 3.

“I really did not expect to be chosen because it was open to musicians aged 15-21, but I am one of those people who always likes to apply and see what happens, so I was really surprised to be chosen but also really honoured.”
