A former School Captain at The Manchester Grammar School (MGS) is one of an elite set of engineering students who has been awarded a Diamond Jubilee Scholarship by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
David Swarbrick, 18, of Heaton Moor, Stockport, was School Captain at MGS last year and having achieved an exceptional four A*s in his A-levels earlier this year, was awarded a place at Churchill College, Cambridge.
And the talented engineer is now one of just 100 students to have been awarded The Diamond Jubilee Scholarship, which is given to students who achieved at least three As at A-level and have accepted a place on an IET accredited engineering or technology degree this autumn.
David will now receive at least £1,000 per year to help towards his studies.
The scholarships are named in honour of the IET’s patron, HM The Queen, and aim to address the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills shortage in the UK. The main aim of the initiative is to encourage talented students like David to study IET accredited courses, which will put them on a path that is not only challenging and rewarding, but is also vital to future prosperity.
David said: “I’m incredibly grateful and honoured to have been awarded the scholarship.
“The mentoring and support it will provide will be invaluable in my professional development as an engineer.
“During my degree I’m looking forward to working with the IET to encourage more students towards Engineering, and after graduating I hope to work in the industry.”
Jeremy Watson, CBE, IET President, added: “In a world where technology is moving faster than ever before, I believe we need to think more broadly and remove unnecessary barriers that might be discouraging more young people from becoming engineers.
“In other words, we need to be more inclusive about inspiring and recruiting the next generation of engineers.
“With this in mind, we are really pleased to give financial help to over 100 young people as a result of our prestigious Diamond Jubilee Scholarships.
“We hope that they will go on to become the leaders of tomorrow in an industry which offers a diverse range of exciting opportunities and challenges.”
