Almost 30 pupils from The Manchester Grammar School have been offered places at Oxford and Cambridge.

A total of 27 pupils received offers for a wide range of courses, including multiple offers in modern languages, engineering, architecture, economics and the natural sciences.

Seven of the offers were to study medicine.

This continues a strong tradition of success for MGS, which includes 33 Oxbridge offers last year with 100 Old Mancunians currently studying at Oxford and Cambridge.

Twin brothers Lawrence and Zak Hopkins, from Hale, both received offers from the University of Cambridge – Lawrence was offered a place at St Catharine’s to read geography and brother Zak a place at Downing College to study veterinary medicine.

School Captain David Swarbrick, of Stockport, who has received an offer to study engineering at Churchill College, Cambridge, said: “It’s been a whirlwind of emotions. As there are so many applications for so few places, I feel extremely lucky to have received an offer.

“I would particularly like to thank my subject teachers and form tutor. They have been really supportive of my application to university.

“I am especially grateful to the teachers who have guided my learning off syllabus into more interesting topics. I think the greater depth of the work I have done has made me better prepared for the different learning experience of university.”

High Master, Dr Martin Boulton, said: “I would like to congratulate our boys. Competition for places at Oxford and Cambridge has never been more intense. I am delighted that their hard work has been rewarded.”
