A Stockport pupil from The Manchester Grammar School (MGS) has been crowned as the best young translator in Britain after winning a Europe-wide competition.

Daniel Farley, 17, from Bramhall, has won the European Commission’s annual translation competition for sixth-form students, Juvenes Translatores, for his Spanish-to-English translation on the topic of 60 years of the European Union.

Across the EU, 3,348 students took part with 28 winners in total – one from each country.

And Daniel’s impressive translation skills saw him beat 333 other UK students drawn from 73 schools from across the country, to claim the title of best young translator in Britain.

Daniel will travel to Brussels on 10 April to receive his trophy from European Commissioner Günther Oettinger.

And it is not just in languages where Daniel excels, as he has also recently secured an offer from Wadham College, Oxford, to study chemistry starting in September 2018.

Daniel said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have won. It was such a surprise. I’m really looking forward to visiting Brussels and meeting the European Commissioner.”

‘He was competing against hundreds of other pupils, including those from some of the top-performing language departments in the country, so for Daniel to be crowned the best young translator in Britain is absolutely fantastic and we are all very proud of him.

“Not only that, but Daniel is a genuine ‘learner’ of languages, rather than acquiring them through his parents or having lived in another country, making his accomplishment even more impressive.”
