New health spa planned as part of £2.8m Grand Central refurbishment

Stockport’s main leisure centre, Grand Central, is undergoing a £2.8m refurbishment with upgraded gym changing and showers now open and work taking place on a new health spa.

The new spa at the facility managed by Life Leisure will feature a sauna, steam room, hydrotherapy pool, aromatherapy room and relaxation area.

The funding programme from Stockport Council follows previous upgrades to the site’s existing fitness suite with new slides and a children’s fun pool also set to open by the summer.

Stockport Council and Life Leisure are also offering two hours’ free car parking at the NCP Stockport Exchange car park for all Grand Central users.

Malcolm McPhail, CEO of Life Leisure, said: “We’ve worked really closely with existing members, the council and the general public to understand what changes and improvements would make a difference to people’s lives.

“That’s why, as well as introducing aspects such as the new changing facilities and health spa, we’ve looked at practical measures such as free parking which became possible with Stockport Council.”

Councillor Sheila Bailey, Stockport Council’s Cabinet member for Communities and Housing, added: “The council has made a priority to invest in the improvement of Life Leisure sites, so residents can have access to affordable and modernised leisure facilities, with the benefit of having free parking.

“Grand Central is the most well-used leisure complex in Stockport and I’m sure it will continue to be for years to come thanks to the Council’s continued investment.”
