Potholes may soon be a hazard of the past across Stockport as the Government has revealed where the first £50m of funding will be allocated under its Pothole Action Fund outlined in last month’s Budget.

The cash will be used to fix 943,000 potholes on the UK’s local roads this year.

It is the first payment made under the £250m five -year fund.

Stockport is set to receive £151,000 as part of the pot of funding apportioned to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. This is equivalent to repairing 2,849 potholes based on a cost of repair of £53 per pothole!

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, MP for the Derbyshire Dales, said: “Almost every journey starts and ends on a local road, so the government is giving councils £250 million specifically to tackle the blight of potholes in their area.

“This is just one part of our unprecedented investment in local road maintenance over the next five years.

“We are giving a record £6 billion to local authorities in England that will improve journeys across the regions.”
