Stockport’s Christian Iddon claimed to a trio of podium placed finishes in the latest round of the 2021 Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Donington Park in Leicestershire.
The results close the gap at the top of the standings, leaving Iddon in third place and 15 points behind title rival Tarran Mackenzie [Yamaha] with one round to go.
A fall in qualifying left Iddon with a lot to do, sitting 17th on the grid for race one. But, unfazed by awful wet conditions, a trademark start from the Visiontrack Ducati rider saw him climb to ninth at the end of the first lap.
Iddon made steady progress through the rest of the encounter, dealing brilliantly with the slippery surface to climb to third as the chequered flag fell.
Starting the second clash a little further forward, fourth on the grid, Iddon made an immediate impact, climbing to second on the road, and by lap 11 he’d taken the lead. With four laps to go he conceded to Mackenzie and Danny Buchan [BMW], going on to take third place.
The final race of the weekend looked like it might never get started, as heavy rain caused a delay after two lots of warm-up laps were aborted and the rider headed to the pits.
As the storm clouds passed and a rainbow looked down over the former Formula One venue, Iddon climbed immediately from his fourth placed grid spot to second, and would hold the place to the flag, with Gino Rea [Suzuki] ahead and Lee Jackson [Kawasaki] behind.
Iddon said: “The championship standings are so much better now. We’ve reduced the gap from 33 to 15 points, that’s the main thing. It’s all to play for at Brands Hatch now.”
The championship now heads to the final round at Brands Hatch from October 15-17.
