Didsbury Golf Club’s new captain Mike Serrage is looking to enjoy an exciting, entertaining, successful and special year at his beloved club where he has been a member for 23 years.
When the club has put on entertainment shows Mike and his old pal Tony Taylor – often referred to as the Chuckle Brothers – have usually been first in line to showcase their thespian qualities with one of the highlights being a starring role as the Blues Brothers in Didsbury’s Got Talent.
Mike served his time as an electrician and is now a co-director of a building company with the work demands often limiting him to one round a week but he expects this to be much more in the coming months.
His current handicap is 14, with a best of 13, and he would love to be able to drop to nine during his year in office.
His favourite hole at Didsbury is the par five 12th which he says ‘looks awesome from the tee blocks’ and his other favourite course is Son Vida in Majorca.
Mike’s hobbies, other than golf are going to football matches and golf tournaments.
He is a died-in-the-wool Man United fan and led his Red Heroes to success in the annual match at Didsbury against City in 2015 after many years of disappointment and he is anticipating a great run of results in the years to come.
Mike’s personal golfing highlight was winning President’s Day in 1999 – also a great year for Man United in winning the treble.
Mike said: “We have a great and well respected club with a superb course and many very accomplished players with a great social attitude. Didsbury is a fine advert for golf at all levels and in 2016 I will be very proud to be Captain as we celebrate the club’s 125th anniversary.
“The charity I will be supporting along with Lady Captain Margaret Lloyd is for Parkinson’s UK.
“If I could play a fourball with three other players they would be Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best and Pele.
“Ronaldo was one of the best players I have watched regularly at Old Trafford and Pele was probably the best player in the world in my day and George Best – what a talent and after the round you would certainly enjoy a couple of scoops with him!”
