Manchester Storm top Elite Ice Hockey League after win in Cardiff

Manchester Storm top the Elite Ice Hockey League after a 6-1 win at the Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff over the defending champions with Chris Auger scoring three times

The first period saw Matt Stanisz put the Storm ahead with a powerplay goal in the eighth minute, but the next five minutes saw the Devils dominate the puck.

Auger scored his first of the night a little over six minutes later, again with the man advantage, to see Storm end the first period with a 2-0 lead.

Early into the second period Storm extended their lead with Auger hitting the back of the net to register the Storm’s third powerplay goal of the night, and his second, before Dallas Ehrhardt added an even-strength goal to make it 4-0.

Storm’s scoring exploits continued into the third period, with Luke Moffatt hitting the back of the net less than three minutes into the period.

The continued pressure of the Devils saw Joey Haddad pull one back for the Devils in the 55th minute but Storm’s victory was assured when Auger fired in to an empty net at 57.01 after Cardiff had opted to pull netminder Tom Murdy to secure the Storm’s sixth goal of the night and his third.

Storm travel to Nottingham Panthers on Saturday, before returning home to Altrincham to host the Belfast Giants at the SilverBlades Ice Rink on Sunday.
