Sale ladies look to defend Bell Cup title

The draw has been made for the Manchester and District Ladies Golf Association’s Bell Cup, which is the biggest competition of its kind in the country.

It has been played for since 1911 and the current holders of the Bell Cup are Sale Golf Club, who won a thrilling final at Rochdale Golf Club against Prestbury in 2015.

Sale are in early action in the 2016 competition as they look to defend their trophy, hosting Wilpshire in a preliminary round match and if they win will play the winners of the Pleasington v Hindley Hall match.

Also in preliminary round action are Dunham Forest (winners in 2014), who have a tough tie hosting Delamere Forest.

Through to round one are Ringway v Wigan, Hale v Crompton and Royton, Didsbury v Chorlton, Davyhulme Park v Dean Wood, Northenden v Harwood, Withington v Macclesfield

The competition sees the top seven lady players in the club playing a knock-out competition in which nearly 90 clubs are involved with the aim of reaching finals day for the last four teams on September 2 at Bramhall GC, the home club of the MDLGA president Chris Kelly

The Manchester Alliance preliminary round draws for their Inter Club Knock Outs have been completed with the Archie Preston Trophy for Mixed Foursomes, Seniors and Juniors.

In the Archie Preston Foursomes our local teams in action looking to make it into the last 64 are: Chorlton v Davyhulme Park, Hale v Darwen, Northenden v Westhoughton, Bolton Old Links v Sale, High Legh Park v Ringway, Reddish Vale v Withington.

In the Seniors KO are Worsley Marriott v Ringway and in the Juniors are Lymm v Ashton-on-Mersey and Ringway v Northenden.

All of our other local teams are through to round one with byes.

Former European Tour professional Andrew Murray has been involved in raising funds for many deserving causes for the past 25 years raising hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The feature event has been a pro am which has featured some of the top names in golf, including former Ryder Cup players, and to celebrate the 25th anniversary Andrew’s 2016 Charity pro am will be at Stockport Golf Club on Monday September 12.
