British Triathlon is backing the GO TRI Seashell triathlon for children with learning difficulties and additional special needs.

Seashell Trust is holding a GO TRI Seashell triathlon for anyone aged eight and above who needs individual support to take part, and a GO TRI Seashell duathlon for children aged eight-14.

The distances to be run, cycled and swum at its Cheadle Hulme campus will be individually assessed for each participant.

It has wide paths for cycling and running, a pool and separate hydrotherapy pool for swimming and a fully inclusive fitness suite.

The trust runs an Outstanding-rated special school and college as well as residential homes for children and young people with complex and severe learning disabilities which often include little or no language abilities as well as severe autism.

The charity provides a haven where they can flourish and become valued and valuable members of their community.

Maureen Wilkins, a teacher at the Seashell Trust’s Royal College Manchester who has competed as a GB age-group triathlete, is organising the event alongside Crazy Legs Events.

Maureen said: “This triathlon is unique as it has been adapted to suit every individual’s needs in a safe environment around the trust’s grounds.

“Specialist equipment is also available, such as hoists, adapted bicycles, tricycles, quad cycles and MOTOmeds. Because of the fantastic staff at the trust everyone will be supported.

“We create visual symbols that are structured to each person’s needs to enable athletes to follow a sequence or routine for each activity.”

Oliver Heald, from British Triathlon North West, said: “We are really pleased to be supporting GO TRI Seashell.

‘It is a fantastic opportunity for local children to take part in a GO TRI and another great offer the trust provides for the children and young people that they support.

‘We hope after this event we can work together further with the trust to provide more triathlon opportunities.”

GO TRI Seashell triathlon and duathlon will take place on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Seashell Trust, Stanley Road, Cheadle Hulme, SK8 6RQ.

The cost for both events is £11, to register please follow this link. For more information please contact Maureen Wilkins.
