Coronavirus: Stockport Council suspends collection of green bins

Blue. brown and black bins

Stockport Council has suspended collection of green bins during the coronavirus outbreak.

The green bins are for garden waste and food, with the council asking residents to put food in their black bins.

Blue bins – for paper and card – will now only be collected once a month – on the same day as brown bins (bottles and cans) – while black bins for non-recyclable waste will be collected every fortnight as usual.

The new collections come into force on March 30th.

The council says: “The welfare of our staff alongside the welfare and needs of our residents are uppermost in our minds.

“We’d really appreciate your help and support at this challenging time and ask that you reduce how much waste you put out for collection, if you’re able to.”

Council advice includes:

  • compost or store any grass cuttings and garden cuttings in your garden
  • re-use and recycle as much as you can and please make sure your recycling is clean and dry
  • store any extra waste like cardboard and paper in your home if possible
