Heaton Moor Junior Colts were crowned Lancashire Cup champions for the first time in their history with a 28-18 win over Backburn in Eccles.

The game started at a hectic pace, Blackburn making the early running with a penalty giving them an early lead after just three minutes.

But Heaton Moor struck back after 10 minutes, Asa Bottomley and James Bellis creating for Bob Berry to charge over.

Blackburn then hit back with a try after 17 minutes which was also converted.

Tackles were ferocious at this point by both sides. Nick Tenney struck a penalty five minutes before the break to reduce the deficit to two points added to the bonus of a yellow card for Blackburn for a deliberate knock-on

The Heaton Moor coaching staff made four changes at the break and they proved decisive with Joe Kilbride and Sam Sheppard dominating. Dom Rafferty came in at scrum-half and Jake Barrett at hooker.

Seven minutes in, Jono Glanfield crossed after a brilliant drive from the forwards, one of many line-outs presented beautifully by Shane Ennis to retake the lead by three points.

But halfway through the second half, the game turned again. Blackburn capitalising on a Dominic Rafferty box-kick that held up in the wind and scored a try to make it 15-13.

Moor stepped up with some terrific tackles by skipper and Dylan Starkie provideing the platform for spectacular tries by Will Smith and Berry, Berry’s the result of a wonder catch by Tom Whitehead and an almighty break from Asa Bottomley.

Moor now had a two-score cushion entering the final five minutes.

Blackburn pulled a penalty back but another exciting Heaton Moor move involving the entire back line resulted in the try of the day by super sub Smith, his second of the afternoon.
