Sale Golf Club will host the 27th final of the long-running WGTB Inter Club Trophy on Sunday, October 2.
Fairfield Golf Club, with their fantastic new clubhouse and redesigned and challenging course, were great hosts for the 26th playing of the WGTB Club Trophy.
They were also provided a superb service off the course giving a warm welcome, led by Captain Malcolm Jones, members and all of their efficient staff, to the players who had battled through knock out rounds since May to reach finals day.
Fairfield also provided magnificent weather, enjoyed by all to set up a terrific final that saw just a point separate the top five pairs.
Denton were the holders of the trophy won by Garry Bennell and Neal Painter in 2014 and it looked for most of the day that it would return to Denton as the early pace was set by their formidable pairing of Phil Rudkin and Dave Kenyon as they edged a cpo on 39 points from club colleagues Paul Kassimmi and Andy Evans.
Just a point off the pace were Alan Newbold and Rob Livingston (Denton) and home pair Terry Quayle and John Whelan.
So it was all down to the last group on the course to upset the applecart and provide the traditional ‘sting in the tail’.
Graham Jenkinson, the redoubtable and industrious organiser for Sale and the Balfour and Houldsworth Committee, and John Hassett posted another 39-pointer which was level on back nine points with Phil Rudkin and Dave Kenyon but clinched victory with a better back six to win a luxury stay and golf at Marriott Worsley Park and a round for four at a QHotels venue of their choice.
Phil Rudkin and Dave Kenyon will enjoy a stay and golf at Mottram Hall and there were great rounds for four at Tytherington, Shrigley Hall and Marriott Worsley Park for the other top pairs.
