Pupils at Urmston Grammar School have kicked off a new campaign that aims to raise £250,000 for a new artificial pitch.
The children were set a challenge to come up with a name for the campaign – and the three winners were Lauren Bird, aged 14, Sedona Groves and Isobel Benson – both aged 13 – who aptly came up with the logos for our campaign slogan ‘Please Pitch In’.
The school is tackling the funding problem by putting on fundraising events and activities to raise money to resurface the popular sports area but is also hoping for the backing of the wider community to improve the facilities.
Rifaat Wall, principal at the school on Newton Road, said: “The artificial pitch is so popular with the children.
“There is never a break time or lunch hour when it is not full, as well as being used constantly throughout the day for sports lessons.
“But this has meant that it has become very worn down, and as a result, is not a great playing field for the pupils.
“So we are hoping to raise money through the campaign, and would really appreciate the support from the wider community.
“I am delighted that the children have got behind the campaign so well and I love the winning logo and the name.
“We have an amazing number of sporty children at Urmston and we want to be able to provide them with the facilities they need to give them the best opportunities.”
