A warm, bright day greeted the British Racing & Sports Car Club (BRSCC) for four wheeled action at Oulton Park on Saturday (14thOct).

On the programme were the Avon Tyres Formula Ford 1600 Championship, BRSCC F100 Championship, Electrovape.co.uk XR Challenge and a four-hour race for Fun Cup cars.

The XR Challenge cars had two fifteen minute races on the shorter Foster’s circuit. On pole for race one was Mark Robinson in his Fiesta XR2 with Michael Blackburn alongside in his Escort XR3i. On the second row was Justin Roberts and Greg Speight, from Altrincham, in their XR2’s.

Robinson took the lead from the start from Roberts, Blackburn and a fast starting Mark Buxton from the fourth row in his XR2. This was the start of a terrific scrap for the win. Blackburn moved up to second on lap two and took the lead on lap three only to have to give best to Robinson again on lap four. Meanwhile Buxton was dropping away leaving Speight in fourth. This was the order until lap ten when Blackburn closed in on Robinson and tried to take the lead going into Foster’s. They touched which took them both off the track leaving Roberts in the lead with Speight second. This was the order at the chequered flag with Robinson and Blackburn managing to hang on to third and fourth.

The grid for race two was based on the finishing order of race one with Roberts on pole, Speight next to him and Robinson and Blackburn on row two.

Speight got a good start and took a lead which he would manage to hang onto until the end despite intense pressure from behind. Into the first corner it was Speight from Roberts, Robinson and Blackburn. These four lapped virtually nose to tail for the entire race, Robinson making brief contact with the rear of Roberts car at one point approaching Foster’s. Blackburn took third on lap three and second on lap four. Roberts lost two places on lap four to Roberts and Robinson leaving him fourth. On lap six Robinson was up to second and right on the back of Speight. Speight held on though and crossed the flag by just over half a second from Robinson, Blackburn and Roberts.

“It was a fantastic end to the season and a great second race” commented Speight. “I had a brilliant start but spent most of the race looking in my mirrors ensuring I didn’t leave any room to be overtaken! The three guys behind each had their turn to try to get past but I managed to hold them off without making any mistakes.

“After a season which saw the car suffer from various issues it was great to end the season on a high”, Greg added.

In other events there were two wins for Joshua Smith in the Northern Formula Ford Championship. Michael Watton and Robert Sayell took a win apiece in the F1000 Championship and the FunCup event was won by Andy Bicknell and Marcus Clutton in the DespatchBay.com car.
